Public domainPublic domainfalsefalse

This work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 70 years or fewer.

You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States.
Note that a few countries have copyright terms longer than 70 years: Mexico has 100 years, Jamaica has 95 years, Colombia has 80 years, and Guatemala and Samoa have 75 years. This image may not be in the public domain in these countries, which moreover do not implement the rule of the shorter term. Honduras has a general copyright term of 75 years, but it does implement the rule of the shorter term. Copyright may extend on works created by French who died for France in World War II (more information), Russians who served in the Eastern Front of World War II (known as the Great Patriotic War in Russia) and posthumously rehabilitated victims of Soviet repressions (more information).
This file has been identified as being free of known restrictions under copyright law, including all related and neighboring rights.

Template documentation[ view * edit * history * purge ]
This documentation is transcluded from Template:PD-old-auto/doc.

Please use {{PD-old-auto-expired}} or {{PD-old-auto-1996}} instead of this template:
  • {{PD-old-auto-expired}} functions like this template, but additionally indicates that the work was first published before 1931, making it public domain in the United States.
  • {{PD-old-auto-1996}} also functions similarly, but determines public-domain status based on the time elapsed since the author's death.

The licensing template {{PD-old-auto}} automatically calculates the current public-domain year span, based on the year in which the author died.

The license box displayed by the template will update annually to select the appropriate license boxes from the multi-language license boxes for public-domain spans (for example, {{PD-old-80}} for life of the author plus 80 years). In future years, it will change to {{PD-old-95}} and then {{PD-old-100}}, as applicable.

As time passes, the license span will adjust automatically, since more years will have elapsed since the author's lifetime. Once the template is in place, there is no need to re-edit a page to update the public-domain year span--the calculation is based on the actual year (currently 2026).

Impact -- This template applies to many thousands of image files by authors who died in the 20th century. It is expected to cover most works among the top 5,000 artists and painters. In future years, manual updates to adjust the public-domain year span will no longer be necessary.

The template automatically sets the following categories: Category:PD Old auto: no death date if required "deathyear" is missing

{{PD-old-auto |deathyear= }}
