Iran dominate Asian Para Open Taekwondo Championships in Beirut


Iran dominated the Asian Para Open Taekwondo Championships in Lebanon's capital Beirut, winning five golds.

Saeid Sadeghianpour won the men's under-63 kilograms final against Uzbekistan's Kudratjon Haydarov at the Nouhad Naufal Stadium, and another Uzbek finalist in Asadbek Anvarov lost to an Iranian athlete in Hamed Haghshenas at over-80kg.

Maryam Abdollahpour Deroei won the women's under-47kg final, Mahdiyeh Hosseini triumphed over India's Muskan Muskan at under-52kg and Roza Ebrahimi beat Uzbekistan's Kamola Juraeva at under-57kg.

Uzbekistan placed second on the medals table with three golds, their three winners each beating Iranian opponents.

Javokhir Alikulov prevailed over Mahdi Pourrahnama in the men's under-70kg final, Asadbek Toshtemirov beat Alireza Bakht at under-80kg and Guljonoy Naimova took women's over-65kg gold at the expense of Leila Mirzaei.

Chinese Taipei and Kazakhstan were the other nations to take golds at the Asian Para Open Taekwondo Championships.

Xiao Xiang-wen took Chinese Taipei's victory in the men's under-58kg against Iran's Mohammad Taha Hasanpour, while for Kazakhstan Mariam Salimgereeva defeated Iran's Romina Chamsouraki in the women's under-65kg.

Para taekwondo debuted at the Paralympics at Tokyo 2020 with three men's and three women's events, and is set for an increase to five categories in each gender at Paris 2024.
