Venues


The venue clusters for the 2018 Asian Games were located in and around Central Jakarta's Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex as well as in Jakarta's suburbs and in Palembang, which has organised several major multi-sports events, including the 2011 Southeast Asian Games for 4,000 athletes from 11 National Olympic Committees.

They included two exhibition centres hosting at least 13 indoor sports.

The Athletes' Village was in North Jakarta and the Media Village in South Jakarta.

Palembang is a 47-minute flight from Jakarta.

Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex and the wider area

The centrepiece of the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex is the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, which hosted athletics and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies at the Games.

Work to renovate the stadium, built for when Jakarta hosted the 1962 Asian Games, was confirmed by officials as being complete in January 2018.

It reportedly needed IDR779.9 billion (PS40 million/$55 million/EUR45 million) of improvement work.

The venue was inaugurated on January 14 by Indonesia's President Joko Widodo, prior to the country's men's football friendly against Iceland.

The European nation won the match 4-1.

Work done to the stadium included upgrades to the lighting and sound systems, while benches were replaced by individual seats.

The capacity was dropped by 10,000 to 80,000.

The wider Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex, which has facilities for aquatics, archery, badminton, baseball and softball, basketball, hockey, squash and tennis, was also renovated.

Jakarta suburbs

Jakarta's suburbs played host to seven sports, including canoeing, mountain biking, road cycling, men's football, modern pentathlon and paragliding.

Men's football action was held across the Pakansari Stadium in Cibinong, the Stadion Wibawa Mukti in Cikarang, the Patriot Chandrabhaga Stadium in Bekasi and the Jalak Harupat Soreang Stadium in Bandung.

Road cycling was staged from Jalan Raya Subang to Bandung Barat, while mountain biking was held on Khe Bun Hill in Subang.

Arthayasa Stables and Country Club in Depok hosted modern pentathlon with paragliding and canoeing taking place at Gunung Mas Agro Tourism amusement park in Bogor and at Bendungan Rentang dam in Majalengka respectively.

Palembang

Palembang played host to 10 sports, including beach volleyball, bowling, canoe sprint, women's football, roller sports, rowing, sepaktakraw, shooting, sport climbing, tennis and soft tennis, and triathlon.

Women's football action was held across the Gelora Sriwijaya Stadium and the Bumi Sriwijaya Stadium.

The Gelora Sriwijaya Stadium is based in the Jakabaring Sport City (JSC) along with all other venues in the cluster.

The JSC Lake staged canoe sprint and rowing, while triathlon took place both there and in the surrounding area.

Beach volleyball, bowling, roller sports, shooting and sport climbing were hosted by aptly named venues; the JSC Beachball Arena, JSC Bowling Center, JSC Roller Skate Track, JSC Shooting Range and JSC Sport Climbing Stadium respectively.

Sepaktakraw competition was held at the JSC Ranau Stadium.
