Under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010, the ACCC can be directed to undertake in-depth inquiries into certain matters. Inquiries involve extensive investigation and analysis, including public consultation. We publish our findings in a formal report to help inform consumers, encourage public debate and inform policy consideration.

Digital advertising services inquiry

On 10 February 2020 the Australian Government directed the ACCC to conduct an inquiry into markets for the supply of digital advertising technology services and digital advertising agency services.

Digital platform services inquiry 2020-2025

On 10 February 2020 the Australian Government directed the ACCC to conduct an inquiry into markets for the supply of digital platform services.

Electricity market monitoring 2018-2025

On 20 August 2018, the Treasurer directed the ACCC to hold a public inquiry that will monitor the prices, profits and margins in the supply of electricity in the National Energy Market.

Gas inquiry 2017-2025

On 19 April 2017 the Australian Government directed the ACCC to conduct a wide-ranging inquiry into the supply of and demand for wholesale gas in Australia, as well as to publish regular information on the supply and pricing of gas for three years. On 25 July 2019, Treasurer the Hon Josh Frydenberg MP, wrote to the ACCC extending the ACCC's inquiry into the gas market until December 2025.

Murray-Darling Basin water markets inquiry

The ACCC has been directed to conduct an inquiry into markets for tradeable water rights in the Murray-Darling Basin.
